How to Address the King That’s Not Your King
And what it looks like when he is.

Years ago, I crossed paths with Prince Charles in a quiet, narrow stairwell at Harrods.
It made me wonder — what’s the proper way to address a monarch… if you don’t recognize his authority?

Protocol says “Your Majesty.”
But for a free man, “Good afternoon, Sir” will do.
Respect doesn’t require obedience.

Then again, not everyone has that choice.
Because when Canada’s Prime Minister takes the oath of office, he swears allegiance to King Charles III, his heirs and successors.

That’s what it looks like —
when the king is your king.
