Carolina Custom Leather has DOUBLED their sales as a result of POTUS tariffs.💥
Owner Bob Timberlake says, "It could not have been better for us... We finally, finally, finally are successful in getting furniture back in North Carolina and America." 👏
So here is a little insight into being a boots on the ground local of North Carolina.
As most of you know, I live on the coast of North Carolina. I moved here in 1996 where Carolina welcomed me with one of the biggest hurricanes on the books! Moving here being a very young mother I knew little about hurricanes and my Mom and Dad were visiting us from up north to see the house and the area we moved to.
My parents had the idea that instead of staying at the house we would drive up to the NC furniture marts! They are located in several towns including Thomasville NC which I'm sure you all are familiar with.
Every year they would have furniture markets where people came from all over to purchase large orders of furniture for their showrooms. Made in the USA baby🙌.
After the markets shows we're over they'd all sell off the samples which were just viewed and perhaps sat on a time or two by the prospective buyers.
The furniture was amazing quality and the prices were so good at these sample sales. Most of the time they were a fraction of the retail price. And just moving here new, we were looking for a lot of furniture because we didn't take all of it with us moving over 700 miles away.
It was one of the best memories I have as I never experienced anything like it. Then there would be these little side shoot warehouses that had samples that they must have bought in bulk, and I literally snagged a solid wood side table that I still have for $10.
My point is this was truly a great thing we had going in NC and then came all the cheaply made and low priced furniture that flooded America from China.
A lot of furniture makers in NC eventually went out of business. Towns became abandoned, it was so very sad to watch as our jobs went overseas! They could not compete with the prices. Even though their product was so much better quality, people didn't care as we became a throwaway society. As the landfills filled up with all the junk that broke within a short period of time.
My mom always used to say to me when I was younger, "I can't afford to buy cheap" and at that time I didn't know what that meant. It seemed to be contradictory. But I believe we all know what that means now. Those things do not last. They end up in the landfills and we have to repurchase them often. Whereas my $10 find from almost 30 years ago I still have and love. I also picked up on that trip a gorgeous Thomasville armchair that has a leather seat and a tapestry back that's all carved wood for a fraction of the price. It's just gorgeous. It's something I can pass down to my children.
I for one am so excited to see these businesses thrive again and have things made here with the quality and craftsmanship we've grown to love about "Made in the USA".
All part of making America Great Again!🇺🇸
