Former Newsom Chief of Staff Indicted in $225K Fraud and $1.7M Tax Scheme

Dana Williamson, 53, who served as Gov. Gavin Newsom’s chief of staff in 2023, faces 23 federal charges for allegedly defrauding a dormant political campaign fund and falsifying over $1.7 million in personal expenses as tax-deductible business costs.

- Campaign Fraud: With two co-conspirators, used shell companies to bill a dormant state campaign account ~$225,000 for fake consulting work; funds allegedly paid a “no-show” salary to a colleague’s wife.

- Tax Evasion: Deducted ~$1.7 million in personal luxuries as business expenses on 2021–2023 returns, including:
- $170,000 luxury birthday trip to Mexico
- $21,000+ private jet flights
- $19,000 home HVAC system
- $15,000+ Chanel handbag and jewelry
- Payments to relatives and friends for fictitious jobs
