Are sanctuary cities legal? Not exactly. Courts have generally said cities don’t have to actively assist federal immigration enforcement — but they also can’t obstruct it. Sanctuary isn’t sanctuary from the law. With the White House pushing for clearer boundaries, the real legal question may be where non-participation ends and obstruction begins.
