SITREP: Tunnel Collapse in Wilmington, Los Angeles - Trapping 31 Workers
• The collapse happened in the 1700 block of North Figueroa Street, near the intersection of West Lomita Boulevard and South Figueroa Street in Wilmington, an industrial area of Los Angeles.
• Los Angeles Effluent Outfall Tunnel project, a $630 million initiative by the Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts. This 7-mile-long, 18-foot-diameter tunnel descends up to 450 feet underground and is designed for wastewater management.
• The trapped workers were located as far as 6 miles south of the tunnel's sole access point
• What Happened?
A section of the tunnel collapsed, isolating the workers underground.
No official cause has been identified, other than “We had Squeezing Ground” one official said.
