China’s President Xi Jinping said in a New Year’s Eve speech that reunification with Taiwan was “unstoppable,” delivered a day after Chinese live-fire military drills around the island ended.
Australia said it was deeply concerned by the exercises warning they were destabilising and risked accidents or escalation, and said it had raised these concerns directly with Chinese officials while opposing any unilateral change to the status quo across the Taiwan Strait.


Finnish police seized the cargo vessel Fitburg, which was travelling from Russia to Israel, on suspicion of damaging an undersea telecommunications cable linking Helsinki and Tallinn, and said 14 crew members of mixed nationalities were being held as part of the investigation.


The EU’s foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas rejected Russian claims that Ukraine attacked Russian government sites, calling them unfounded and a deliberate attempt to disrupt peace talks, as Moscow alleged a drone strike on one of President Vladimir Putin’s residences.
