Here’s the last 24 hours in geopolitics.
The US military said it shot down an Iranian drone after it approached the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln in the Arabian Sea with what it described as unclear intent, intercepting it with an F-35 fighter jet.
This as a US-flagged tanker was approached and challenged by small vessels linked to Iran’s Revolutionary Guards while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, but continued on its route and was later escorted by a US warship.
Iran has conditionally agreed to resume nuclear talks with the United States, with officials saying preparations are underway following presidential approval, though the venue and format remain unresolved and Tehran has sought limits on participants and scope.
The OECD’s secretary-general said European leaders should closely consider Mario Draghi’s recommendations as the EU faces structural economic challenges from tariffs and shifting global trade dynamics, describing the bloc as successful but in need of adaptation.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro said his first in-person meeting with US President Donald Trump had an optimistic and constructive tone, with both leaders agreeing to work together on combating illicit substance issues and discussing sanctions despite ongoing differences.
