European leaders condemned President Donald Trump’s threat to impose new tariffs on eight allied countries over their opposition to a proposed US takeover of Greenland, after he announced a 10% tariff from February first that could rise to 25% and remain in place until a deal on Greenland is reached.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei accused US President Donald Trump of being a “criminal” for backing protests in Iran, blamed demonstrators for “several thousand” casualties, and said that recent unrest was foreign-backed.
Israel has objected to the White House’s selection of leaders for a proposed Gaza “board of peace,” saying some appointments were not coordinated with Israel and were contrary to its policy, and instructed officials to raise concerns with the US secretary of state.
The United States carried out a third retaliatory strike in northwest Syria, eliminating an extremist-affiliated leader whom US Central Command said was directly linked to the December ambush that left two US soldiers and an American civilian interpreter deceased.
The European Union and South America’s Mercosur bloc signed a free trade agreement after 25 years of negotiations, creating one of the world’s largest free trade areas and eliminating tariffs on more than 90% of bilateral trade, pending ratification by the European Parliament and Mercosur legislatures.
