Here’s the last 24 hours in geopolitics.
Eight European NATO allies said they stand in solidarity with Denmark and Greenland after US President Donald Trump threatened tariffs over opposition to American control of Greenland, warning that such measures undermine transatlantic relations and risk a “dangerous downward spiral,” while reaffirming commitments to Arctic security.
Markets reacted sharply to the threat, with global stocks bracing for declines after Trump said tariffs of 10% from February, rising to 25% in June, could be imposed on goods from the eight countries, with weekend indicators pointing to falls in UK and US equities.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent defended the move, saying the tariffs were a strategic measure to prevent a future national emergency and a geopolitical use of US economic power linked to securing American control of Greenland.
French President Emmanuel Macron said he will urge the European Union to activate its Anti-Coercion Instrument in response to US President Donald Trump’s tariff threats describing the measures as unacceptable and calling for a united European response.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian warned that any attack on Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei would amount to a declaration of war, responding to speculation that US President Donald Trump is considering removing or eliminating him.
