Here’s some more news from the last 24 hours in geopolitics.
The UK has declined to sign up to US President Donald Trump’s proposed Board of Peace for now, with Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper citing concerns about the initiative’s broader legal scope and the possible involvement of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
This as Trump withdrew Canada’s invitation to join the “board of peace” after Prime Minister Mark Carney signalled Canada would not commit to the $1bn fee for permanent membership and said officials were still reviewing the initiative’s details.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy criticised European countries at the World Economic Forum in Davos for what he described as inaction on defence, calling for a united European armed force and highlighting reliance on US military support.
Zelenskyy also said Ukraine, Russia and the United States are expected to hold trilateral talks in Abu Dhabi this weekend, which would mark the first meeting involving all three sides since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, though attendance details remain unclear and Moscow has not confirmed participation.
Greenland and Denmark reaffirmed that sovereignty is a “red line” after US President Donald Trump said a framework agreed with NATO’s secretary general would give the United States “total access” to the Arctic island, with leaders in Nuuk and Copenhagen saying they were unaware of the deal’s details and ruled out any compromise on territorial integrity.
