๐Ÿšจ CCP Funded Chinese Nationals Busted Smuggling โ€˜Crop-Destroying Super Fungusโ€™ into U.S. in a Plot to Destroy our Food Supply

โ€ข The smuggling attempt occurred in July 2024, but the case was JUST publicly disclosed today.

โ€ข The two Chinese nationals, Yunqing Jian (33) and Zunyong Liu (34), were charged by the DOJ for attempting to smuggle โ€œFusarium graminearumโ€, an extremely dangerous fungus, through Detroit Metropolitan Airport, hidden in plastic baggies inside Liuโ€™s backpack.

โ€ข Yunqing Jian, one of the two Chinese nationals charged in this case, worked at the University of Michigan, where she was a postdoctoral fellow at the universityโ€™s Molecular Plant-Microbe Laboratory.
โ€”โ€” Her boyfriend, Zunyong Liu, was planning to use its laboratory facilities for research on the smuggled โ€œFusarium graminearumโ€ fungus, and potentially releasing it into the United States.
โ€”โ€” Liu conducts research on the SAME pathogen at a university in China.

โ€ข Liu initially LIED but later admitted to the smuggling; Jianโ€™s electronics revealed they had direct financial funding ties to the Chinese Communist Party

โ€ข Both came into the US under the Biden Administration and now face charges of conspiracy, smuggling goods, making false statements, and visa fraud.

โ€ข Jian was arrested and appeared in federal court in Detroit on June 3, 2025; Liu was denied entry to the U.S. and remains AT LARGE, likely fleeing to China.
